留學一百問:
Q:
當學生有口吃的問題時,要如何考好托福口說測驗?請參考ETS怎麼說?
A: Yes,
if a student has medically documented stuttering
special accommodations are available for the
testing situation. These possible accommodations
vary depending on the situation, but could
include:
1) not taking the Speaking
section of TOEFL iBT at all; thus, no total
score would be reported and only scores for the
Listening, Writing and Reading sections would
appear on the score report; or
2) receiving extra time
before responding in order to formulate a
response; or
3) receiving extra time to
actually respond.
I encourage potential applicant with medically
documented stuttering to consider applying for
special accommodations. However, if she/he
choose not to, I suggest that she/he takes
advantage of test preparation materials (whether
ETS-developed or not) in order to help her know
what the test would measure. Familiarity with
the test could help ease her tension, and thus
ease the stuttering.
Finally, I said that in
responding to the questions the student should
be sure to state her main points first when she
begins speaking. There is no penalty for running
out of time per se, what matters is the quality
of what has been said. The student can also take
brief notes to organize her thinking before she
responds in the speaking section.
